How Does Acne Affect Your Social Life?

By: Clear Skin Advocate

“Acne has definitely ruined my social life - or should I say, I’ve definitely ruined my social life because I can't handle the thought of socializing with so many zits and red marks all over my face. I've done my best to cope….”

Acne is one of the most disgusting skin conditions one can have. Acne is so infuriating since it's not like some debilitating illness that leaves you weak, bed ridden, or unable to move, you can essentially do all the stuff you want to do but it's just that it messes with your head so bad that it creates a mental barrier or brick wall that stops you from doing something. Ironically devastating, isn’t it?
In a society that places a great emphasis on physical appearances, it is inevitable to say that physical attributes is superficial. Everyone wants to look good and pull off the best on how they appear, after all, who doesn’t want to look pretty/ handsome? Thus the struggle of coping with your acne while preventing social life is really deteriorating.

How many times did you say “ no” to your friends asking you to hang out? Many times, I bet. Go take a selfie? No way. It’s just simply because you can’t calm yourself down to let you forget you have acne. Friends with clear skin sometimes don’t understand how emotionally painful it is to have a face struggling with acne, they sometimes shrug it off and then saying, “It’s not a big deal” which in turn giving you the feeling that it seems like your emotions are not that valid – that you are just being ridiculous with your feelings.

How about looking straight into someone’s eyes? Have you ever had an issue on eye to eye contact? I am pretty sure you do. I, myself, have always had that problem too.  I always have an uncomfortable feeling when talking to someone knowing that my face is bad, full of horrible zits and acne. It is also embarrassing when someone asks like “What happened to your face?”, and the worst scenario if someone will be asking it in front of many people, as in public. Talking about acne as well make it somehow painful, isn’t it? It’s like you are being reminded how disgraceful your face is.

Nothing is as bad as social withdrawal. You are actually blocking your own freedom to go out and socialize. You are probably missing out school days just because you don’t want to get your acne be noticed by your enemies and bully friends. You might be avoiding your crush in school or in your town so you’re making yourself anti-social in fear of rejections. Acne is a skin disease, but the psychological effects are truly what make it horribly distressing and disturbing.
